I went to my first yoga classes in the early 80’s, and after drifting away for a few years to raise my family, work and study. I eventually returned to yoga with a more whole hearted commitment in the 90's. Yoga is a lifestyle - a way of being, seeing and moving in the world. Yoga has been a beautiful gift, a blessing for me, as I have experienced the immense benefits of the practices, on every level - particularly in times of life's big challenges, such dealing with stress, illness, grief and loss.
I felt the profound benefits that yoga offered, and wanted to deepen my practice, so in 2009/10, I began to study with Venkatesa Integral Yoga Academy of Australasia, obtaining a Yoga Teaching Diploma (500 hours), and began to share yoga with others in 2011 - what a joy it has been! I will never stop learning and those I share yoga with are the biggest teachers. I have continued my journey delving into restorative yoga and yin yoga, both have been a regular addition to my class schedule for more than 12 years now - practices that I simply love and continue to learn from! In 2016 I became a pre and post-natal yoga teacher - enabling me to share yoga with women during this very special time of pregnancy and preparing for birth, and into early motherhood - making yoga more accessible and safe for those who benefit so much from the practices. I continue to delve into learning and experiencing different aspects of yoga and have more recently undertaken training in Yoga for Healthy Ageing, somatic movement practices and 'Yoga and the Neuro-Science Connection' - which are all subtle, slow and gentle practices, that are so beneficial and nurturing to us during this current climate of change, conflict and uncertainty. As a yoga practitioner and teacher, and particularly as I age, I am continually learning, adjusting and expanding the parameters and style of my practices. This is simply the nature of yoga - enabling me to create and share classes based on experience that hopefully inspire and move others. I tailor classes to meet the needs of the groups or individuals I work with, creating classes fun, functional, unique and student/body centred. I have had some amazing opportunities to share yoga with a range of different groups, in many different settings - with Women's Health and Young Mum's groups, and Caregivers, Veterans,. With school students and their teachers, youth program participants, health care professionals, Cancer Survivors, private family groups and corporate groups - in parks, on beaches, in private homes and park and garden settings, workplaces and community halls, at retreats and day-longs. I have treasured every opportunity, every experience, and every person I have come into contact with on this wonderfully inspiring journey. Encounter Yoga is based in a small, home-based studio - with a BIG heart! - catering for intimate groups of just 7 people. I look forward to sharing the joys of yoga with you soon, Om Shanti Anita xx |
